January 2018 Update – Luna went in for her MRI in July of 2017. She was also tentatively scheduled for surgery that day.  However  the neurologist decided, based on the MRI, that conservative treatment was the best alternative. So Luna was put on strict crate rest along with anti-inflammatory and pain medications.  The neurologist was very pleased with Luna’s progress at her follow up visit in August, and Luna has continued to do well through the new year.

Original Post – From Luna’s owner:  Luna is a 5 year old Corgi mix that I got when she was only 6 weeks old. I got her for my Niece Minnie as a lap dog/ companion. Minnie is quadriplegic, and I thought that a small dog would be good company for her. Luna was a bit rambunctious to be a lap dog, but she has become a beloved member of our family. She loves to sit at the foot of Minnie’s wheelchair and play protector. She will lay with Minnie when she watches television.

I took her to the emergency vet on Thursday evening when it appeared that Luna was having pain when walking. She had x-rays and blood work and was prescribed pain medications. I returned to the ER Friday evening  because Luna could no longer walk on her hind legs. We were referred to the neurology specialty center.

We took Luna to neurology center the next morning, where she was diagnosed with IVDD and a ruptured disc. It was recommended that she have an MRI and surgery right away. I applied for 4 loans on Saturday and was denied. I work as a substance abuse counselor and spiritual coach and I am single, so my options are quite limited. I had no option but to bring her home with medication and rest.

The staff at the neurology center told me about Bandits Bandaid as well as several other organizations. I applied and am so grateful that Bandit’s Bandaid responded to my request for assistance. I feel hopeful that Luna may get the surgery she desperately needs before there is any further damage and possible paralysis. I am so appreciative of any support given.
